Rui Boomclick portrait

When someone asks Rui Boomclick, why do you love music, they usually get this response, "That's like asking 'what do you love about air' or 'water'. It's in my blood, it's a huge part of who I am and I couldn't live without it. I believe music captures the essence of life and lets us communicate it to one another and share it with each other. And you can't have a party without music, can you?"

Born in the very centre of London, England to Portuguese parents at a Hospital next to Buckingham Palace, Rui Boomclick spent most of his childhood as a neighbor to the Queen. Having lived in London his entire life, he's lived all over it, North AND South (which is unusual for Londoners - where it's usually one or the other).

Rui was born with music bug and have spent his whole life getting bitten by it over and over again. His first public performance was miming to a 3 Degrees record when he was about 8 years old. Rui started a weekend job at 13 to buy his first synth (Casio CZ5000, cost 799 pounds in 1987 - which was a lot of Saturdays! - and he still owns it today). He started his first band at 15 (Torque). Playing mostly covers, they gigged a lot, playing at Portuguese community events all over London. Cue forward many, many lonely years of sitting in front of a computer learning how to use them to play & record music!

In his late 20s, he formed another band - Boomclick. They went on to sign to Sunday Best, a label run by Rob da Bank (one of the UK's biggest radio DJs, the 'new John Peel', and also promoter of the Bestival music festival). Several critically-acclaimed EPs an album and dozens of gigs before splitting up - 'musical differences' - a couple of years ago. Since then - writing, recording and occasional live performance with Rosa Fernandez as Boomclick Soundsystem. "At BCSS, we make simple songs about love, love gone wrong and then love gone right again; lo-fi, epic happy/sad music."

And this was part of the instant connection to the Cove, as Rui and the Cove started jamming and writing and recording in London in 2006. When asked about the early days of working with the eclectic members of the Cove, Rui reflects "It was about not so much two different worlds colliding as two different worlds having a cup of tea and realizing that our peoples can learn from another and benefit from each other :) I immediately felt the strength of the songs and could hear where to go with them, almost without thinking."
